SCAPULARS & MEDALS

WEARING a brown scapular developed among the laity from the 14th century following the vision depicted above of English monk St Simon Stock in 1251. The Holy Queen came to him in his cell in Aylesford, where he was Superior General of the new Carmelite order.

As he prayed to Mary for help with his vocation, she gave him a brown cloth scapular with the words: "Take this scapular. It shall be a sign of salvation, a protection in danger and a pledge of peace. Whosoever dies clothed in this scapular shall not suffer eternal fire.”

Scapulars grew in popularity, as Popes Clement VII in 1530, St Pius V in 1566, Gregory XIII in 1577 and Paul V in 1613 affirmed the Sabbatine Privilege, teaching that Mary will intercede to free from Purgatory wearers of the scapular, especially the Saturday after they die.

Catholic Tradition offers a range of attractive scapulars, including blue, white, black, red, green and the unique five-fold scapular, as well as a large variety of brown scapular designs, all hand made in England by traditionalist nuns.
